1.3 Water Treatment

The objective of water treatment plant is to produce adequate quantity of treated water with continuous supply of pure and palatable water having characteristics such as clear, colorless, odorless, palatable, safe and reasonably soft and free of toxic matters. In terms of the standards, water after treatment must comply with the World Health Organization Guidelines.

The treatment strategy to be adopted for any water depends upon the quality of raw water. The quality of the raw water of the dam was tested for pH, turbidity, coliforms and other chemical constituents. The results showed that water is chemically fit for human consumption, but the presence of physical and biological impurities which are indicated by high turbidity and coliforms renders it undrinkable. The treatment strategy adopted, therefore, focuses on the removal of turbidity and coliform from water by bringing them within the WHO permissible limits.
