The journey for finding a suitable point for drawing raw water from Mangla Lake for the Mirpur Water Supply scheme appears to be finally ending at Jari Khud. The earlier recommended sites i.e Bothi Khud and Bong Canal to serve as raw water source point could not materialize due to multiple reasons which are well documented in the previous reports. The recent report submitted by TechnoArt which documents a mechanism for drawing water from the dam at Jari Khud to satisfy different uses recommends two drawl options for the Water Supply Scheme Mirpur:
- Draw water directly from the discharge tunnel by laying an independent pipe equipped with Pressure Reducing Valve to dissipate excessive pressure from the discharge tunnel to the Water Treatment Plant site.
- Draw water from the Stilling Basin located at the head of the Khari Canal through gravity pipes in to a Sump and pump water to the Water Treatment Plant site.
Comparison of the two options have been carried out and the second option has been recommended for adoption by the consultants due to the perennial availability of water throughout the year against the first one in which water supply could be suspended for two months during the periods of water shortage.
The site of Water Treatment Plant has been recommended on the right bank of the Khari Canal at a distance of 400 Ft from the Stilling basin. As earlier mentioned in the reports, Water Treatment Plant will have a capacity to treat 18 MGD of water and will be based on the Rapid Sand Gravity Filtration Technology. The plant will be developed in three phases each of 6 MGD. Ph I & II will be developed from the current budget whereas Ph III will be developed in future when the need arise, however, space for the extension of the plant in Ph III will be earmarked in the plant premises.
Format of the design report is such that it first discusses the various components of the proposed Plant and the process involved in the treatment and then gives a detailed design and calculations for the sizing of the components. In Pakistan, Standard Design Criteria or any Guideline for the design of Water Treatment Plant has not been framed yet by any agency, therefore in its absence values of parameters which form the basis of design have been taken from the literature. The references of these parameters have been marked and the reasons for adoption of a particular value have been discussed to avoid any ambiguity.
The last chapter is devoted to working out the hydraulic profile of the Water Treatment Plant.
